As Twitter undergoes controversial changes to become X, Meta’s Threads app entered the scene in early July 2023 aiming to leverage Instagram’s popularity and capitalize on Twitter’s stumble.

With millions of people already signed up, including verified brands and notable figures, Threads is making waves

For a full overview of what Threads is (including how to get started), check out our guide here. But, essentially Threads offers features similar to Twitter for Instagram users, and perhaps even surpasses Twitter in certain aspects. Although similar, it’s important to recognize the distinctions that set Threads and Twitter apart.

Threads has even been described as the Twitter-killer! But, is this true? Are these two so similar that you should only pick one to avoid redundancy? Read on to compare Threads to Twitter and understand the key difference.

Pro Tip: Not on Threads yet? Here's how to get started.

Character Limit

One notable difference between Twitter and Threads is the character limit. While X/Twitter allows up to 280 characters per tweet, Threads expands the limit to 500 characters, providing you with more space to express your thoughts and ideas.

When it comes to signing up, Threads offers a seamless integration with Instagram. Users can create a Threads account using their existing Instagram credentials, streamlining the registration process. In contrast, X/Twitter sign-up is independent and does not sync with other accounts.

Account Deletion

Deleting a Threads account requires deleting the connected Instagram account as well. On the other hand, X/Twitter offers a more straightforward approach to account deletion. Users can easily deactivate or delete their X/Twitter accounts, and permanent deletion occurs after 30 consecutive days of deactivation.

Username

While creating an X/Twitter account, users can select their own unique username, as long as it’s available. In Threads, however, users are required to use their Instagram username as their Threads username.

Hashtags

X/Twitter is widely known for its effective use of hashtags to group conversations and aid in search functionality. In contrast, Threads currently does not utilize hashtags, and search is limited to accounts – there is no topic search feature at this time.

Verification

In Threads, if you are verified on Instagram, your verification status carries over to your Threads account, providing credibility and authenticity. On X/Twitter, things are a bit different. Only paid accounts are eligible to receive the blue checkmark for verification. Pricing starts at $8/month ($84/year) in available countries to get the blue checkmark in addition to access to some paid features.

Desktop Version

While X/Twitter offers a desktop version accessible through web browsers, Threads is exclusively available as a mobile app, focusing on the app-only experience.

Paid Ads

X/Twitter provides various options for paid advertising, enabling businesses to promote their content. At present, Threads does not offer paid advertising, distinguishing its approach to monetization and user experience. However, it is assumed that Threads will add advertising in the near future.

Pricing

Threads is free to use, while X/Twitter offers different pricing options (including free) for businesses and individuals who wish to access additional features or promote their content.

According to X/Twitter, Blue subscriptions are paid on a monthly or annual basis on web, iOS, or Android with localized pricing starting at $8/month or $84/year in available countries.

Messaging

X/Twitter includes a direct messaging feature, allowing users to have private conversations. In contrast, Threads does not currently offer a messaging feature, emphasizing its focus on public text-based conversations rather than private interactions.

Conclusion – Which Should You Choose?

When it comes to choosing between Threads and X/Twitter, it’s important to consider the preferences and behaviors of your target audience. While Threads offers a new and exciting platform for connecting with your Instagram followers, X/Twitter remains a powerful tool for engaging with your target audience if that’s where they are already active.

If your business is active on Instagram and enjoys a large following, you should absolutely be experimenting with Threads. Early reports are that there’s much more engagement on Threads, but that can soon change.

If you’re not active on Instagram or don’t have a large following there, perhaps Threads isn’t worth the time.

However, it’s important to remember it’s not necessarily an either-or decision. Understanding your audience and their preferred communication channels is key. If you have a strong following on Instagram, leveraging Threads as a way to connect with them in a new way can be a valuable addition to your marketing strategy.

On the other hand, if you’ve already established a presence on X/Twitter and are effectively connecting with your target audience there, it may be beneficial to continue focusing on that platform.

Remember, diversifying your messaging and meeting your audience where they like to be is essential. It’s never a bad idea to explore different platforms and adapt your approach accordingly. By understanding the key differences between Threads and X/Twitter, as outlined in the infographic provided, you can quickly make the necessary adjustments to your copy and effectively tailor your content for each platform.

Ultimately, the choice between Threads and X/Twitter should be based on your audience’s preferences and your specific marketing goals. By staying attuned to your audience’s needs and being flexible in your approach, you can maximize your reach and engagement across multiple social platforms.
